Be the light even when no one is looking
By: Braelyn Burton
God wants us to be the light to everyone around us no matter if we know them or not. When He says “love one another;” He is not limiting it to just the people you know and get along with.
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35
We are called to be the light that can be seen and the salt that can be tasted. The Light of Jesus Christ should be seen, heard, and demonstrated throughout the whole world. Never hide the Light that is within you; the Light of Jesus Christ.
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:13-16
Like the Bible says, we need to have peace because God gives us peace so we don’t have to worry or stress or be afraid. God wants us to just be still because God will never put us in a situation we cannot get out of. God always has a way for His children; they just have to seek Him for guidance. He will fight for us but we need to believe and trust in Him. As Christians, we need to have patience with Believers and unbelievers just the same. For instance, if you tell someone you are a Christian then they watch how you act towards other people; how do you think they will feel about Christians if they are an unbeliever? If you are mean or hurt others; are you being the Light that God called you to be? We are supposed to be the same person when we walk into church as when we walk into school or hang out with nonbelievers.
As God never changes or conforms to this world, we should never let ourselves change for those around us.
When you enter a room, you should want people to see Jesus as the Light shining so bright around you that you don’t even have to say a word for them to know you are His. Can others see Jesus in you?
Just as your actions can make or break your testimony, your words can do the same. The tongue is often an instrument of sin.
“How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.” James 3:5-12
Don’t let your words or actions destroy the person God created you to be. We need to think before we speak because we could say the wrong thing at the wrong time without even realizing it. We could hurt a person that might later hurt someone else or hurt themselves because of the harsh words we once said. Imagine the pain your words have caused. Would you take back anything you’ve said before? Ask your Heavenly Father for forgiveness then move forward and glorify Him with your words.
Be the Light and do what God has called us to do. Be like him and not like this world.
“Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” James 4:4
He gives us a choice to be like the world or to be like him…what will you choose?
